Are Mother Nurture Enhanced Waters too sweet for a pregnant woman?

Are Mother Nurture Truffles too rich for a pregnant woman?

Again, because we know that moms struggle with nausea during pregnancy, our Enhanced Truffles have been designed to be a small treat.  However, we have learned from all the moms that have helped developed the delicious taste of our truffles, that every mom is different – and each day of pregnancy can be different.   So, we’ve developed the truffles to allow you to choose how to treat yourself.  You can eat just one to satiate that craving for a little something sweet – or choose to eat a couple for a more decadent experience.

As with most foods, temperature of consumption is a personal preference.  Our enhanced waters are shelf stable, but best served chilled or over ice. Our Ingredients

What is DHA and why is it important during pregnancy?

DHA is a “good” type of fat called a polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acid. Omega-3s are a family of polyunsaturated fatty acids essential to health and human development. DHA supports development of the brain, eyes, and central nervous system, which is why it is uniquely important for pregnant and lactating women. Experts recommend that moms take in 350 – 450 mg of DHA daily. Unfortunately, these DHA fatty acids are not produced by the human body and therefore must be obtained from diet or supplementation. (2) We include DHA in Mother Nurture Truffles to provide moms and their babies with an easy additional source of this critical nutrient.

What is B12 and why is it important during pregnancy?

Vitamin B12, also called cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that has a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, the formation of red blood cells, and it helps make DNA, the genetic material in all of our cells. It is one of eight B vitamins. The World Health Organization has deemed B12 to be as important as folic acid in the development of babies. (3) The National Institutes of Health has recommended that pregnant and nursing moms consume 2.8 micrograms (mcg) of B12 each day. We include B12 in Mother Nurture Enhanced Waters so moms and their babies can benefit from an additional source of this critical nutrient.

What is Folic Acid and why is it important during pregnancy?

Folic acid is one of the B vitamins.  It helps our bodies produce and maintain new cells. Critical to developing babies, it is known to help prevent serious birth defects of the spinal cord and of the brain known as neural tube defects (NTDs). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women follow current dietary guidelines by getting at least 600  – 800 mcg of folic acid from all sources every day to help prevent major birth defects of the baby’s brain and spine. (4) Mother Nurture has included folic acid in all of its products because it can be hard to get enough of this important nutrient from food alone.

What is choline and why is it important during pregnancy?

Choline is a water-soluble macronutrient related to other vitamins, like those in the B vitamin family.  It is essential to the healthy development of a baby’s brain and spinal cord. Extra choline has been been shown to enhance the development and function of the placenta.  Choline also supports mom’s liver and nerve function, muscle movement,  and metabolism during pregnancy and lactation. (2) (5) Pregnant and breastfeeding moms are recommended to take in 450 – 550 mg of choline daily.  We have enhanced Mother Nurture Waters with choline to help moms supplement their daily intake of this critical nutrient.

What is Calcium and why is it important during pregnancy?

Calcium is a nutrient needed to build strong teeth and bones in developing babies. It also allows blood to clot, muscles and nerves to function properly, and the heart to beat normally. A growing baby needs a considerable amount of calcium to develop. If Mom does not consume enough calcium to sustain the needs of her developing baby, the body will take calcium from Mom’s bones (decreasing Mom’s bone mass and increasing her risk for osteoporosis). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant and lactating women over 18 get the US recommended daily allowance (USRDA) of at least 1,000 mg of calcium from all sources every day. (4) (6) Mother Nurture has included calcium in all of its products so moms and their babies can benefit from an additional source of this critical nutrient.

What is Vitamin D and why is it important during pregnancy?

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that works with calcium to help a baby’s bones and teeth develop as well assisting in the development of healthy skin and eyesight. Vitamin D has other roles in the body, including modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation. The FDA recommends that pregnant and lactating women get 15 mcg of calcium each day. (2) Mother Nurture Truffles have Vitamin D in the ganache to help moms and their babies get more of their daily value of this important nutrient.

What sweeteners are used in Mother Nurture products?

Mother Nurture products rely on only natural, pure cane sugar and deliciously ripe monk fruit to create their lightly sweet taste.

Do the sweeteners in Mother Nurture have a funny aftertaste?

The only sweeteners used in Mother Nurture products are pure cane sugar and monk fruit so they don’t have that funny aftertaste that you find in some beverages!

What is Monk Fruit?

Monk fruit is a small sub-tropical melon that has been cultivated in the remote mountains of Southern China for centuries. According to legend, monk fruit is named after the Buddhist monks who first cultivated the fruit nearly 800 years ago.  The unique low-calorie sweetness of monk fruit comes from naturally occurring antioxidants found in the fruit that have a delicious, sweet taste, without the high calories of sugar.

Should I be aware of any potential allergens in Mother Nurture products?

Mother Nurture Enhanced Waters do not contain any of the eight major food allergens identified by the FDA including milk, eggs, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat or soybeans. Mother Nurture Truffles contain or may contain ingredients that are often found in high quality chocolate including milk, soy, coconuts, and peanuts/tree nuts.

Prenatal Nutrition

How much liquid should a woman drink each day while pregnant?

It is always important to consume enough fluids during pregnancy.  Water is needed to flush out toxins, aid in digestion, and ensure our bodies absorb the essential nutrients from the foods we eat – all functions that become even more important during pregnancy.  Not having enough to drink can impact both Mom and her developing baby.  The Food and Nutrition Board at the Institute of Medicine recommends that pregnant women drink a minimum of 101 ounces of fluid daily and lactating women should drink 128 ounces of fluid daily. (7) This is especially true in warmer weather, at higher altitudes, and during or after exercise.

Should a pregnant woman eat chocolate during pregnancy?

At Mother Nurture we believe in moderation, but when it comes to chocolate we know that moderation can be tough!  The good news is that you can skip the guilt and indulge in chocolate based on recent news on the health benefits of chocolate.  Research presented at the 2016 Pregnancy Meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine in Atlanta, GA indicated that eating 30 grams of chocolate a day during pregnancy may benefit placental health as well as fetal growth and development. (8)  While more research is needed, additional studies have indicated that there may even be a relationship between eating a moderate amount of chocolate and lowering the risk of preeclampsia, regulating blood pressure, boosting immunity, and enhancing mood or reducing stress.
